Carpal tunnel surgery

Carpal tunnel surgery

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition where the median nerve is trapped in a tight tunnel as it travels from the wrist into the hand. Symptoms can include tingling and numbness in the fingers (often at night), pain, clumsiness or dropping things and occasionally weak grip.

Often nerve conduction studies are done to confirm the diagnosis. Carpal tunnel syndrome is most commonly treated with a procedure to release the tunnel causing pressure on the median nerve. This usually resolves many or all of the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. The procedure normally takes around 30 minutes and the risks of surgery will be discussed with you in clinic.

Time Scale

This procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic and you can go home on the same day as the operation. Recovery takes 2-4 weeks and return to work will vary depending on your job.
